Metformin is often the first line of medical care for many people with type 2 diabetes, including children. Unlike sulfonylureas, which act on the pancreas, increasing the release of insulin, no metformin is induced to produce more pancreatic insulin. Unfortunately, prolonged use and high doses of drugs are associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. Scientists at the Korean Catholic University of Seoul, Korea and the University of South Carolina in the United States, compared metformin therapy in combination to see which combination would be more safe in terms of vitamin B12 than other medicines.
